The lst July is to be a red-letter day in the annals of Whitstable, for on that day the new post-office is to be opened. A few years ago considerable improvements ware made in tbe present office, but it was to tbe present postmaster to successfully agitate for an entirely new office. The new building one of the sights the town, but it is certainly not all outward show, for Mr. George Reeves has carried out all the fittings in a thoroughly artistic and up-to-date plan, and is to congratulated tbe success of his efforts. The block floors are a great improvement on the old system. Immediately behind counter the telegraph room. Telegrams handed in at the counter will be passed into this room through a trap-window and telegrams for delivery will be handed from the telegraph room through a similar window into the adjoining room, set apart for telegraph boys. Tha sorting room is fitted up in the latest style, tbe table being fitted with swinging gates for the men, who hitherto have had to stand while doing the sorting. A separate table is set apart for parcels, and the registered letters are to be kept in small lock-up cupboards. One great advantage of the new sorting tables is that it is absolutely impossible for a letter to be lost, as every part of the table is open to the view of the sorter. The postmaster has a small office set apart for his own use at one end of the mail office. In passing oyer the new premises one cannot fail to be struck with the thoroughness with which every detail of the work has been carried out. The architect was O. C. Wylson, Esq, of London and Tankerton. The internal fittings were all supplied locally, Messrs. ... Nicholls and Co. doing the ironmongery and gas fittings, Mr. Kirby the office furniture, and Mr. W. Holden the clocks.
