The new building occupies a large island site and houses the Post Office and Telephone Exchange and also the Inland Revenue Offices. In designing the building particular attention has been paid to the architectural importance of King's Lynn and an elevation of restrained classical dignity has been produced, designed to harmonise with the many architectural monuments of the famous town ... The building generally is of warm red brickwork. The main entrance is flanked by columns surmounted by a stone balcony. The public office is panelled in elm and beech obtained from the piles taken from the bed of the Thames during the demolition of Waterloo Bridge. The floor is laid in ceramic mosaic. The complete effect offered by the new building is one of civic dignity ..." |
