The Postmaster- General has accepted Mr.Geo. Pordage's offer of the site at present occupied by Nos. 6,7, and 8, East Street— the block of old property between Mrs. Coulter's and Mrs. Stidolph's residences—and there the new post office is to be erected, without the townspeople the town authorities being asked whether they like it or not. The plans have been settled, and we understand that the building works will be put in hand soon as the weather is favourable. Mr. Pordage is to build, and the Postmaster-General is to be his tenant. Mr. Pover draw the plans, and by his courtesy we have been allowed to inspect them. The site has a frontage to East Street of 38 feet, and depth of about 68 feet. The building will be three storeys high, with front of red brick and stone. On the ground floor will be public office, measuring 19ft. 6in. by 23ft.; an instrument room; lady clerks' retiring room; small room for telegraph boys; an office and an additional private room for the postmaster ; sorting room, measuring 23ft. by 174 ft., lighted from above with a large lantern light; and at the extreme rear a postmen's room on one side and the usual offices on the other. The two upper storeys are devoted entirely to the postmaster's residence, which will comprise ten apartments and offices. There is also a spacious basement, lighted with Hayward's semi-prism lights. |
