LOST
Although many of the buildings vacated by the Post Office have been listed to give the exteriors a measure of protection, some have not been so fortunate and have been demolished. Some, of course, have been demolished and replaced by new buildings on the same site. The most notable example of demolition is London's first purpose built General Post Office, built in 1829 to the designs of Sir Robert Smirke and demolished in 1912. Visitors to the Vestry Museum in Walthamstow may be surprised to see a fragment from the one of the capitals of this neo-classical edifice which after much alteration and enlargement, was deemed no longer fit for purpose, and demolished.
