Timeline
1700-1869
? indicates a measure of uncertainty about the year of completed construction or of opening. It will be noted that on many occasions two or three different dates are given for the post office building completion years or years of opening in a particular town or city. This is because in the larger urban areas like Birmingham, Hull, Nottingham, and Sheffield, either the leasehold agreements or the increasing amount of business, for example, the adoption of the parcel post in 1883, (as well public demand for "more commodious" and convenient premises") necessitated a move to different, usually larger sites, the majority of which from about 1865 were purpose-built buildings designed by the architects of the Office of Works. Extensions or additions to post office buildings are not included.
Much of the information has been gleaned from contemporary local newspaper notices and reports: these do not always make it entirely clear whether a new post office was a new building or adaptation of existing premises.
