It is reasonable to assume that the architect was Henry Seccombe, the Office of Works architect responsible for many of the post offices built in this region in the 1930s Building description From: Devon and Exeter Gazette 15 December 1939, p. 12 Sunday was moving and house-warming day for Cullompton postal staff, under the supervision of the Postmaster (Mr. A. C. Webb). Enquiries have failed to show for certainty the number of years the Post Office has stood on the old site, but it is certainly well over 60 years, and was formerly a post office and ironmonger's business combined, and owned by the late Mr Mitchell, father Mrs. Reynolds, who still owns the property. The Government were fortunate in securing the premises opposite, until recently occupied Messrs. Lowerman, whereon has been erected office which can only be described as palatial and, one would think, appropriate to the last decree. The office has a frontage of 50 feet and a depth of 100 feet, exclusive area space and garage. Contained in the latter is the automatic telephone exchange, which has been operation for the past three months. The counters, etc., in the spacious public office are of mahogany, with floors artistic quarry tiles, and a handsome entrance lobby with telephone on the left. The building is heated the latest type of radiators. At the rear is a sorting office the last thing in comfort and convenience and covers an area of 60ft. x 30ft. There was no formal opening ceremony. |
