BRIDPORT POST OFFICE
25 West Street
Architect: Charles Bouton Smith Year: 1913 Archive sources Dorset History Centre: D1173/1 Selected bibliographical references Western Gazette 5 Sep 1913, p. 4 History Opened: 3 Sep 1913 Building description From: Western Gazette 5 September 1913, p. 4 The new Post-office in West-street, which has been built to take the place of the office in East-street, which has proved too for the increased work, was used for the first time on Sunday. The new building is in every way suited for postal work, the convenience of the public and the office staff being well studied. It is a very great improvement on the old office, and the only drawback is its position, which is not quite as central as that of the old office. There is a large sorting shed, and now the telephone exchange is also located in the same building, this being a much more convenient arrangement than that which formerly existed. Instead of opening on Monday morning, was at first anticipated, the office was opened for transmitting business at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The first customer in the new building was a small boy named Albert Fowler, of Victoria-grove, who opened a savings bank account. |
