The erection of the new poet office for Ross having just been commenced, we are now able to supply our readers with a few particulars concerning this much needed improvement. It will occupy a site in the Gloucester-road, nearly opposite the present post office, the land having been purchased from Mr O. J. Wright, of Rougemont House. The contractors are Messrs. Flewelling and Huckson, of Victoria Road. Swindon, and although their tender, which was slightly over £8,OOO, was accepted in August last, the contract has only been signed within the past fortnight. At present, the ground is being laid out, and in the course of a day or two, the site will be barricaded off, but actual building operations will not be commenced before the new year. The building, which will be of brick with Bath stone dressings, will of a plain domestic character, having a frontage of 45 ft. to the Gloucester-road, and a height of about 30 ft. The foundation will be a bed of concrete 2 ft. in thickness. In the basement, which will have an entrance from the Old Gloucester-road, will be the basket room, the clerks' room, and the postmen's room. On the ground floor will be the public office, 26 ft. by 13 ft. ; the postmaster's room, Instrument room, and a large sorting office, 54 ft. by 26 ft. This sorting room is larger than usual for towns the size of Ross, and will be a great improvement on the present arrangement of sorting the letters in the public office. On the first floor will be the caretaker's bedroom and the female clerks' room, and the second floor will also consist of caretaker's rooms. The architect of the building is Mr. W. T. Oldrieve, of Storey's Gate, Westminster, and the work will be carried out under the superintendence of Mr. John E.P. Ladd, clerk of works. The contract is to be completed by September next, but it is expected that the building will be flashed prior to that date.
