Building description
From: Edinburgh Evening News 14 May 1904, p, 6
The above is a front view of the new Post Office which has just been erected for Peebles at a cost of about £3500. The building is of one storey from the street level, but there is a sunk flat at the back. The front elevation is carried out in cream-coloured freestone from Northumberland, and is surmounted by a balustrade. The various rooms in the interior have been all fitted in the most modern and approved style, and there is ample accommodation provided both for the officials and the public. Forty years ago one man was quite capable of delivering all the letters in town twice day a salary of £12 per annum. Now there are seven employed in the four deliveries daily. The new premises will be great convenience to the public, although had the site been in the High Street instead of the Northgate, it would have been still more suitable, but the Post Office authorities had no choice in the matter. Tho new premises are to be opened for the public service on Monday.
